I’m the first to admit I’m a stresser. I stress about everything. My head often feels like a washing machine on spin cycle with nonstop thoughts about everything from kids to business to husbands (actually, husband, I do just have one – no sister wives action going on here!) I stress about not being there enough for the kids, being in the office too long, I even stress about not walking the dogs enough! My head just does not stop, so you can imagine when Bec suggested I go rock climbing and share the experience with you in a Happy Friday clip that I completely went into stress mode with being terrified of heights and wondering how safe would it be? Even after she had convinced me, I was still stressing that I had too much on to leave the office and go on an adventure into the unknown. But I’m a team player and knew it would be a fun experience and something you guys would enjoy too. So I saddled up and headed to Rockit Climbing Gym to see what indoor rock climbing was all about.
As I entered the building and met with Royce, the owner of Rockit, it occurred to me ‘What on earth was I doing?’ Here I was, a 33 year old mother of 2, about to throw herself into rock climbing for the first time with no experience or training. Royce must have sensed my fear and put me at ease explaining just how many people he meets daily who have the same fears and that today would be a day of fun and adrenaline. I decided that I was up for a challenge and after being harnessed in there was no turning back, especially after hearing that kids as young as 4 rock climb.
Royce took me through to the climbing walls and showed me the ropes (pardon the pun), it all seemed easy enough, follow the one colour hand hold all the way up and use your legs to push you up. I took one look up and convinced myself I’d only make it half way but as long as I gave it a go that would be okay. I found my footing and up I went, slowly reaching for each hand hold when I realised I was three quarters of the way up!! I couldn’t believe my eyes, I looked down to see Royce looking smaller and suddenly felt like I might fall when I found my inner tiger and pounced to the next hand hold until I reached the top. I did it, I actually did it! I couldn’t believe it, my heart was pumping, my muscles shook, and my body was giddy while feeling 10 feet tall and bullet proof. Royce and Bec cheered as I abseiled down. I could hear the Rocky music playing in my head, I felt like some sort of rock climbing champ! I waited for Royce to award me with a medal for being fearless but instead he took me on to my next challenge – an even steeper wall.
My first wall was completely flat whereas this one had peaks and curves that screamed ‘Come and get me, rookie!’ Still on my adrenaline high, I began climbing the wall and lost my footing within seconds, but instead of falling I held on for dear life and pushed myself to the next hand hold, managing to pull myself out of my cliff hanger dilemma. As I neared the peak my heart pumped, my muscles vibrated, and my mind was frightened but fierce and it pushed me all the way to the top. As I came back down I was like a 5 year old filled with pop rocks and sherbet, I was in a state I’m rarely in – pure hard core adrenaline. With no fears, no stress, and an empty head, I was ready for an adventure. I felt like a teenager again, flying by the seat of my pants with not a care in the world.
The design of Rockit Indoor Climbing Gym is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Royce used the best in safety equipment and I felt completely safe and in good hands. The gym has a fun feel to it with great music pumping that you can’t help but jig to as you climb. Before Royce opened the gym he travelled to America to research how other gyms were set up to ensure he had the best of everything for his members – and I have to say he has done an amazing job, the design was superb and a real credit to him.
After trying a few more of the rock walls I was exhausted and my muscles were done for the day. I took off my gear smiling like a Cheshire Cat and proud of myself for conquering my fears by trying something new. Not only had I got in my fitness for the day but I’d also done the impossible, I’d emptied my brain and literally checked my stress at the door. I thanked Royce and promised myself I would be back again not only for my fitness but also for a stress reliever.
