Miss One reviews the Starlight Sounds Hippo from Vtech Toys

In many of my blogs you have heard me rave about my love of Vtech and their educational toys that combine fun and learning. Recently I received a great big box of Vtech toys to review with Master 6 and Miss One and immediately there was one that really caught my eye, the Starlight Sounds Hippo. The Starlight Sounds Hippo is a clever toy that plays music and shines a fabulous starry night sky that’s perfect to put little ones to sleep.

Ever since Miss One was born she’s required noise and interaction to be put to sleep. If I were to put her in a silent room she would tear it apart, yet add some music and she falls asleep quickly and with ease. Mr Tink and I have a checklist as we put her down: we play white noise (full blast hairdryer, I’m hoping she takes this on-board as I’d love a live in hairdresser), then we hit the star light that shines stars all over the ceiling, next it’s onto her Eeyore who has an inbuilt nightlight, and to finish we press her bear’s foot 3 times and he plays lullabies for 15 minutes.

Yes, the kid has more going on in her room than an amusement park, she makes Dreamworld look bland and lifeless with her plethora of lights and music. Some may be reading this and asking, “Why? Wean her off it, that’s not necessary”. For those people, I have one word… Red head. Her red hair takes over and believe me, tapping a bear’s foot 3 times is easier than crying for hours on end. So Mr Tink and I have been doing this bedtime jig for close to 2 years now and we are so well rehearsed we could almost do it in our sleep (I do when she wakes up at ungodly hours throughout the night).

So you can imagine my Jiminy Cricket jump in the air when I realised that the Starlight Sounds Hippo does everything that we’ve been doing all in one!

Featuring 4 modes of play, a timer, and adjustable volume, this handsome hippo did it all just by pressing one button. Just one! My OCD did occasionally go into overdrive unable to cope with one push, but once I over came that it was easy breezy bedtime. And not only is he a ‘Super Hippo’, he’s also ridiculously cute and lures kids in quickly for a cuddle. Another brilliant idea from VTech that this mumma is giving a huge thumbs up to.

My baby girl is almost 3 months old and thrives on lights and sounds. She kicks her little legs and coos when she’s excited and unfortunately there’s not much for her in the way of exciting toys just yet. I believe this Hippo would bring her so much joy!

My nearly 7 month old scrumptious bubba has recently learned how to roll over to her belly in the cot, however she sleeps better on her back. And she just can’t get back to her back yet. 😉 So at this stage, this means rolling her back over numerous times during the night…making for one tired mumma. The hippo would be great to distract her (hopefully!) and keep her on her back with the lights on the ceiling, and the soothing lullabies would be an added bonus to help her drift off. What a great idea!!

We used to have glow in the dark stars on the ceiling to watch as we fell asleep, this is so much more advanced, to be able to sing a lullaby as the kids are drifting off, and to have a timer to stay on to lull them to sleep, this looks amazing, we would really love one.

My eldest has been playing tunes to get himself to sleep since he could reach the buttons so his brother loves the tunes as well but little sis now has been put in her own room and can’t hear anymore. She wakes crying and I have to sneak in and get his music player.. every night!! I don’t mind but the bags under my eyes will be big enough for shopping bags soon. I would swim an ocean of beans for one night sleep.
