Vitamins and nutrition – two words Mums of little children cringe hearing. Kids, although little, have big opinions on what they will and won’t eat, so trying to get a balanced diet into them is similar to walking a puppy – frustrating and hard work. My two have balanced diets as I’m a mummy who obsesses that they aren’t eating enough of the nutrients they need to thrive. Master 7 eats nonstop, especially when it’s meat pies and lollies, but bring out the greens and he’s suddenly full. Miss 2, on the other hand, is obsessed with her greens but eats as much as an ant would, pecking like a little chick and not ever finishing anything. I walk around like a crazed loon pushing food like it’s some sort of cult religion, hoping I can get them to cross over to the other side and eat something healthy and packed full of vitamins. Try as I might, life is crazy and the mornings are rush, rush, rush. Food pushing in the morning is almost impossible, so often my two get away with leaving their breakfast. To combat this I bought vitamin drinks but the cheeky little monkeys left those behind untouched too, so you can imagine my glee when the team from Swisse Vitamins sent me the ultimate kids pack, crammed with special vitamins developed especially for kids.
Each Swisse bottle sung fun, fun, fun (not health, health, health) and they even had Master 7 curious and wanting to know what was inside. Seizing the moment, I read the bottles while secretly impressed and giving Master 7 the old, ‘ooh I don’t know if these are for you’ routine. Begging and pleading for a taste, I let him open the first bottle of Fish Oil in Natural Tropical Flavour. Inside were little orange capsules of fun, Master 7 was convinced they were lollies and put out his hand to try one. He quickly popped one in his mouth and I held my tongue anticipating a huge carry on, but instead he giggled as it popped open in his mouth. He said he was eating slime, which according to a 7 year-old is really cool.
He then started eyeing off the next bottle, Kids Calcium + D3 in Natural Berry Flavour. “What do these ones do?” he asked sounding like Alice from Alice in Wonderland. I told him calcium is great for all your bones and teeth, to which he replied “Well I need strong bones for soccer, Mum. I better have one”. Just like the other vitamin he squealed with delight as it popped and out oozed all the slime aka vitamin goodness. Not content with his vitamin fix yet and verging on some kind of vitamin surge, we kept on going and this time opened the Kids Multi, which unlike the first two, was a hard tablet in the Natural Berry Flavour. Master 7 began chewing and feeling very adult, all the while not catching on that his crazy mother was smiling, enjoying every second. I wanted to squeal, “Do you know what you are eating?!”
To finish off his vitamin frenzy we reached for the last bottle, the Kids Probiotic, also in the Natural Berry Flavour. This one excited me greatly as Master 7 had just come off a course of antibiotics and I’d tried Probiotic powders in the past, all of which had failed miserably. So I was crossing my toes, fingers, legs and eyes, in the hope that he would love this one just as much – and ding, ding, ding, he not only loved it but it was his favourite!
I was gobsmacked, Master 7 not only loved taking his vitamins… He wanted more!
My mornings since our first taste test have become a lot easier, Master 7 has them all lined up just waiting for him to finish his breakfast. So not only is he eating all of his breakfast but he’s also topping up with vitamins that are going to help him through the day and with his development. Plus, not only do they taste great, they’re sugar free and you can give them to kids as young as 2 years old.
Such a clever product from Swisse and one we will be using every day in our home.
